With most of the country experiencing frigid record low temperatures, celebrity manicurist Skyy Hadley shares her tips on how to keep your hands smooth and moisturized to prevent extreme dryness and cracking.
**When the weather is cold, remember to not over wash your hands when trying to avoid catching a cold or the flu. Over washing can dehydrate your hands, causing them to crack, peel and even bleed.
**Apply an oil-based moisturizer after each hand wash to help lock in moisture. The oil will create a protective layer on the skin which will help the skin retain more moisture. Be sure the oil used is a non-clogging oil such as avocado oil or almond oil.
**Since the skin on your hands is thinner than it is on most other parts of the body it's harder to keep your hands moist in cold, dry weather. So to prevent itchiness and cracking, be sure to always wear gloves when you go outside and opt for cotton which is less likely to irritate the skin.
**Never wear gloves that are wet. Wet gloves can cause itching, cracking or even a flare-up of eczema on your hands.
**Avoid hot water baths and showers during the cold winter months. The intense heat breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can actually dry out your skin. Stick with a warm water shower.
