The Three Stooges DVD Review

The Farrelly Bros. (There’s Something About Mary, Dumb & Dumber) bring back a beloved classic comedy act with THE THREE STOOGES, a contemporary take on America’s favorite trio of boneheads came to Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download July 17th from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.  Sean Hayes (“Will & Grace”), Chris Diamantopoulos (“24”) and Will Sasso (“MADTV”) portray the troika of knuckleheads in three hysterical misadventures.

Left on the doorstep of an orphanage run by nuns, newborns Moe (Diamantopoulos), Larry (Hayes), and Curly (Sasso) grow up finger-poking, nyuk-nyuk-nyuking and woo-wooing their way to uncharted levels of knuckleheaded misadventure. Now, out to save their childhood home, only The Three Stooges could become embroiled with an oddball murder plot…while stumbling into starring roles in a phenomenally successful TV reality show.

The Three Stooges is fun for the whole family. With hilarious supporting performances from Larry David (“Seinfeld”), Jane Lynch (“Glee”), Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”) and Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), THE THREE STOOGES “Just Say Moe” edition Blu-ray is loaded with special features including a collection of entertaining and punchy pieces and a unique blend of classic “Stooge” elements in a contemporary setting.

The three stooges come to us as a blast from the past. I remember a lot of people who enjoyed the old shows, and the Farely brothers have really done a good job modernizing the old stooge charm. Most of the ideas are clever and well thought out.

The movie starts by introducing the stooges and the orphanage that raises them from babies. A car makes a speeding loop around the grounds of the orphanage and throws out a bag containing the babies. An unusually manly looking nun opens the bag and gets popped by a baby’s fist. The old stooge sound effects accompany the action throughout the movie.

It is truly fun and entertaining for the whole family. It actually gets a little crazy; Moe gets recruited to appear on the Jersey Shore television show. The movie is broken into chapters and loosely follows a storyline. The stooges must raise almost a million dollars to save the orphanage in which they were raised.

There is a small twist or two to be had, the movie itself is subtly clever and the movie really offers a good deal of content. Anyone who has been truly waiting for this movie will instantly love it. Maybe someone with little interest won’t be blown away, but they will laugh, and so will you. This movie is downright hilarious at times, if a little disturbing in others, it is definitely charming.

1 Sweet Comments:

  1. I thought the use of three shorts was a clever homage to the original, as well as how they stayed close to the original gags and voices. It was a family appropriate movie (even though the kids can’t watch Tom and Jerry), compared to other PG13 movies that should be R these days. I probably wouldn’t have seen it either if I had not put it on my queue for my Blockbuster @Home account. I didn’t watch it until a weekend later, but the kids really enjoyed it. I like that I can return my movie anytime I like and there aren’t any additional fees. Plus I don’t have to drive to a store or rental box since they come in the mail, saving time and gas.
