FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST Blu-ray Review

FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST

Starring a talented voice cast including Robin Williams, Tim Curry, Christian Slater, Samantha Mathis, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST is an enchanting story about taking care of the environment and the power of friendship, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. There's magic in the rainforest and it's called FernGully! Deep in the heart of the forest awaits a paradise filled with tiny sprites, winged fairies and tree spirits who all live in joyful harmony. But when their home is threatened by humans, one courageous sprite gives her all to save it! FernGully is a fantastical adventure into a world you’ll want to visit again and again!

I have grown to the age of sometimes seeing a movie that feels like it just released yesterday, when in actuality it has been around for a while. Sometimes the memories are so fresh even though the film itself has grown old. “FernGully: The Last Rainforest” is a perfect example of this phenomena. I was so young when this movie came out, just barely older than my daughter is now. When I told her about it, she had no clue what I was talking about. I always loved this movie, so the chance to review it was a perfect opportunity to put a little “old school” magic into my kid’s usual regime of TV entertainment.

The enchanted story that FernGully follows is one of magic, tragedy, hope, sacrifice, and good vs. evil. Fairies are the film’s primary race. They think that the humans are extinct, wiped out by a sinister being that the fairies defeated and imprisoned in a tree. One very special fairy’s curiosity leads her to discover that there are humans out there, and she accidently shrinks one that joins her throughout the movie.

The human she shrunk was a logger and his team was destroying the forest. An unlikely chain of events lead the tree that the evil being was trapped in to be cut down. It escaped and resumed its reign of terror, this time focusing on destroying the fairies, determined to have its revenge on them.

This movie has become a classic, and every child deserves a chance to see it. Girls seem to like it better than boys, but it definitely is not a “girls only” film. My daughter loved it, and my son watched the whole thing, he doesn’t do this with many movies. If you have never seen FernGully than you can trust me that your kids will love it and take in a good lesson or two while watching it. Who knows? You might even get a kick out of watching it with them.
