MAMA I Want To Sing DVD Review

 ON THE ROAD TO SUPERSTARDOM,
A YOUNG STARLET MUST FIND HER WAY HOME
A story about faith, family, and the power of love, MAMA, I WANT TO SING smashed onto DVD February 14 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.  Adapted from the hit off-Broadway musical, MAMA, I WANT TO SING brings down the house with electrifying performances by R&B and gospel music legends.

Talented but naïve, Amara Winter (multi-platinum selling artist Ciara) is a young gospel singer who dreams of pop stardom. Raised in a tight-knit community, Amara is discovered by agents who quickly propel her to the top with recording sessions and television appearances.  Soured by the sudden media attention, Amara’s preacher mother (Emmy Award-winner Lynn Whitfield, Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story) implores her to stay grounded.  Amara faithfully pursues her music career even in the face of creating a strained relationship with her mother, and turns to her father (Grammy Award®-winner Marvin Winans, I Can Do Bad All By Myself) and Sister Carrie (Grammy Award-winner Patti LaBelle, “A Different World”) for support.  On her way to the limelight, Amara must learn to navigate the often-treacherous world of celebrity and find a way to remain true to herself and to her family.

MAMA, I WANT TO SING features a star-studded cast, including Billy Zane (Titanic), Broadway legend Ben Vereen (All That Jazz), Hill Harper (For Colored Girls), and Kevin Phillips (Notorious).

This movie is a fantastic tale of life and how complicated it will always be. No matter what situation you find yourself in, there will always be some kind of obstacle to overcome.

Amara Winter, finds this out. Her road to stardom wasn't exactly paved with turmoil, but with her life and very soul on the line, turmoil finds her. There is her mother, who is a very well respected figure in the religious community. She is openly unsupportive of Amara's decisions, music, and videos. Amara doesn't want her mother to hate what she is becoming, but realizes that she cannot allow that to keep her from realizing her dreams.

To further complicate her situation, Amara's father tragically dies. She also must face down the troubles that are inherited with stardom and assuming the role of a celebrity. No one could prepare her for the decisions she would be faced with, despite the fact that she had already weathered so much.

This movie is a good example of life and the toll it takes in exchange for what it gives. It is also a testament that not every celebrity leads the glamorous life that most of the rest of us think they do. It is a good film for people of any age, race, or background.
