My hubby and I have always talked about traveling to other countries sometime in our life. The one thing that we tend to talk about is how are we going to communicate with the locals in the area that we may be traveling to. There are certain key phrases that you can learn that will help you communicate, on a basic level, even if you don't know a foreign language. I hope you find that all of these common phrases could help you as much as I know it will help us.

Kathryn and many of her American colleagues could have benefited from a quick Bosnian or Croatian language lesson. Here, we will explain some common words and phrases to help travelers, including "Hello," "Thank You," "Do You Speak English?" and "Help." Use our handy guide for common travel phrases in Spanish, French, Vietnamese and, of course, Croatian.

                                                                                 “Hello”
The first thing you want to do in any situation is greet the person you’re talking to. Here is how you say “Hello!” in four different languages:

Spanish: ¡Hola!
French: Bonjour!
Vietnamese: Xin chào!
Croatian: Bok!

 “Do You Speak English?”
If you’re foreign language skills are minimal, knowing how to ask people if they speak English is especially useful. Here is how you do that:

Spanish: ¿Hablas Inglés?
French: Parlez-vous anglais?
Vietnamese: Bạn có nói tiếng Anh không?
Croatian: Govorite li engleski?

“Help!”
If you’re in a foreign country, you may need to ask someone for help, perhaps in getting directions, or in case of an emergency. Here is how you say “help:”

Spanish: Ayuda!
French: Aidez-moi!
Vietnamese: Giúp đỡ!
Croatian: Pomoć!

 “Where’s the Toilet?”
No matter what country you travel to, you will, inevitably, need to use the bathroom while sightseeing. Here is how you ask where you can find the toilet:

Spanish: ¿Dónde está el baño?
French: Où sont les toilettes?
Vietnamese: Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu?
Croatian: Gdje je WC?

“Thank You”
If someone helps you by answering a question or pointing you in the right direction, saying “thank you” is the polite thing to do. Here is how you say this phrase:

Spanish: Gracias!
French: Merci!
Vietnamese: Cảm ơn!
Croatian: Hvala!
