Stepping Stones Review/Giveaway CLOSED

#41 lilyk

We all want our kids to be able to read great and with school expecting them to achieve this at such a young age, we tend to have to start early on when their little minds are adsorbing everything. My little girl went into first grade this year with a .03 reading level well, this was actually behind but, by the time she finished school this year she was in a 3rd grade reading level. Which can make a mama really proud. With my little boy I know he would do great as well, but the difference is he actually loves to sit and learn, so I knew when I had the chance to review Stepping Stones Together my little boy was going to benefit from this in so many ways.

About the company:~Stepping Stones Together is a beginning online and printable literacy program. We provide parents with a very affordable 5 step program including resources to teach a child beginning literacy skills. This includes reading comprehension, learning to read, learning to write, and lots of great discussion items to learn how how a child processes information. The program is personalized, motivational with high interest themes such as princesses, fairies, transportation, animals, sports, and superheroes. Children are successful learning to read with parent involvement. This is key to reading success.~
It is a really simple process on how to use the Reading Program with 6 steps. I have also taken the information from the website on how the steps work. The Stepping Stones Together reading program uses an easy to follow approach, which you and your child can complete in just 15 – 20 minutes a day. Consistency and repetition will provide for beginning reading success.

Step 1: You and your child will select one of the pre-selected stories at your child’s appropriate level from your personal homepage (this happens every 2 days as your child should read the same book twice before moving onto the next story).

Step 2: You will read the title of the story to your child, asking them to make a prediction about the story and what they might know about a particular topic. (Day 1 and 2)

Step 3: You and your child take a “picture walk” through the book, looking at the pictures and making predictions about story events/details. (Day 1) You and your child read together, or you read the first time, through a simple 8-sentence story with explicitly obvious text illustration correspondence. (Day1)

Step 4: Your child independently reads the story. (Day 1 and 2)
    a. Have your child place their finger on each word as they read the story.
    b. If your child is struggling with a word ask them to tell you the beginning letter sound of that word. Assist them if necessary with the beginning letter sound. For example, the first letter in doll makes the /duh/ sound.
    c. Have them use the illustrations for clues with a difficult word.
    d. Next, you ask your child the pre-populated reading questions, extending their understanding of the text.
    (Day 1 and/or 2)

Step 5: You ask your child to write and/or draw a response to the pre-populated writing prompt, further extending their understanding, recall and use of high frequency words, as well as enabling them to practice their critical thinking skills. (Day 1 and 2) You reward your child’s efforts asking them to color, cross out or put a sticker on their daily incentive chart indicating they completed a particular story.

Step 6:You can then print out the certificate of completion to showcase in a special location in your house once all the stories in the series are completed.
(10 stories read twice)

When I first started my membership and I started looking around the website I did notice that it is extremely easy to navigate around. So, after I felt like I knew the website really well, I brought my little boy to the computer and he to be honest was really excited since he loves the computer. When I pulled the book up onto the screen I did like that the images were simple yet nice, this way the little ones aren't completely distracted my the pictures and are more welling to pay attention to the reading part.

When we pulled up the first book we really just looked though it and talked about the pictures then we went back and read it aloud and I had him repeat after me plus I had him use his finger like me. It is funny now when you see him in his bedroom he is fake reading with his little finger just too cute. The first book we read was "Dexter the Dinosaur" with it being the first one and all. When we read it my little boy payed attention so well and by the end of the book he was saying "he can" with out me saying it first. I mean I know it was just him at the moment. But, what surprised me was the fact that the next day we did the book again and right when I pulled the book up he started right off on his own and said "he can". I know this isn't like reading a whole sentence but it means so much and I was so proud.

He still continues to impress me with his learning on the website. I also like that after each book if fully completed you can hit completed to place a check mark there so you know that it is all done.
